What has 300 beautiful hectares of soft, skiable snow, thirteen chairlifts, four T-bars, two rope tows and four magic carpets? What has three terrain parks, two toboggan areas and ski in ski out accommodation? It’s Mt.Buller, the holiday hotspot only a few hours from Melbourne. From June to October the stunning ski village comes alive with travellers from all over the world, from expert skiers chasing Buller’s slopes to non-skiers who desire a relaxing snow holiday.
If you do love to hit the slopes, whether that being on a snowboard, a pair of ski’s or the trusty toboggan, I would definitely recommend Buller. For those first-timers out there, the Bourke St run is where you’ll master your first turns and get hooked. The run looks over the town square, with the chairlift leaving from the doorstep of the town’s restaurants, shops and hotels. The gentle slope of the run is custom made to get you up and skiing in no time. If you do need a little extra help, or you want to learn some new tricks or improve on some old ones, group and one-on-one lessons are available and will get you to the next level. For the children be sure to book them into kids ski school where they will make good friends and learn to ski in the safe hands of professional teachers. In no time at all the kids will be teaching you!
For the self-proclaimed speed demons, Buller offers some hair raising black runs, all with different terrains and speeds. Wombat and Little Buller are two of the best runs, offering long, fast rides. The chairlifts and runs are always manned with friendly staff who will offer help at a simple ask. Make sure to sacrifice those sleep in’s and get up early to hit the snow while its nice and fresh. Also make sure to ask the snow staff as to which run they would recommend for your ability. They will also tell you exactly which run is the best that day.
For lunch and a rest, ski right up to one of the many restaurants/cafe’s for a seat beside the fire while you enjoy an amazingly warm hot chocolate. After warming up you can simply strap back into your ski’s and jump back on the slopes within seconds.
At the end of a day on the mountain, simply unstrap your board or skies and head out to dinner at any of the great bars or restaurants. The eateries have warm fires and big meals, live music and always a great atmosphere. Checkout the cinema to see the latest screenings or head to a day spa to get a massage for those weary muscles. A Food store is located in the village if you prefer to cook up a storm at your accommodation.
For those who don’t necessarily wish to ski, there is still so much to do. Sled Dog tours and Scenic Helicopter flights are on the highly recommended list, as well as snowshoeing and the Gnome Roam. The Gnome Roam, by the way, is a hide and seek-ish kind of adventure for the whole family. The gnomes are hidden everywhere throughout Buller - keep your eyes peeled. There is also the Alpine Museum, sports hall, day spa and a gymnasium offering classes or the latest exercise equipment.
Mount Buller is just a few hours from Melbourne with bus transfers picking up from the Melbourne Airport or city daily. Alternatively hire a car and chains and drive up the mountain. If chains sound all a bit hard or scary you can do what we did and leave your vehicle in Mansfield at the base of the mountain and take the bus from there. The great thing is that you can fly in from anywhere in Australia to Melbourne in the morning and be cosy and settled in Mount Buller by the afternoon.
Accommodation choices are varied with many options including ski in ski out, lodge style where you can share a kitchen and lounge area. There are luxury hotel rooms or one, two or three bedroom apartments available all just a short walk from the village and lifts. Free shuttle buses run daily around the village and up the streets so you can jump onboard with your gear and save a walk.
Mount Buller also has a range of summer activities with Mountain biking and bushwalking being very popular. If you want to escape to Mount Buller for a ski holiday or even a summer getaway speak to us at BYOkids and we can arrange everything for you call us today 1300 296 543
