We arrived into Hong Kong Island by boat from Macau and were surprised by the volume of people busily going about their day. We jumped aboard one of the famous Hong Kong trams and made our way down town.
Hong Kong is a fusion of modern shopping centres and hotels mixed with Asian markets, small cafes and street side shops. The trams make it very easy and cheap to get around. We made our way to the peak tram and caught the iconic tourist attraction to the top to enjoy the stunning views.
We choose to walk back down and pass through the botanical gardens and zoo which are well worth a look for families. In the evening don't miss the symphony of lights along Hong Kong harbour. We choose to take a tour and see it from the water, so we set out on a Chinese junk giving us exceptional views of the free show. The symphony of lights is on each evening and involves thousands of lights and laser beams on Hong Kong buildings putting on a show to music. Its fantastic and absolutely free.
We then headed to Hong Kong Mainland for a few nights. The esplanade offers lots of fabulous restaurants, cafes and bars. We choose to stay in Kowloon as its central to everything. Visit Temple Street Markets for great food and a range of weird and wonderful things for sale. Also check out the Bird Market, The Flower Market and The Gold fish Market.
Then came our trip to Lantau Island. We visited the Po Lin Monastery, fascinating place and home to the "largest outdoor bronze Buddha in the world." Our tour included a beautiful vegetarian feast and a visit to Tai O. Tai O is a fishing village on Lantau Island where the houses are built on stilts. On the south coast of Lantau Island, there are two good beaches, Pui O Beach and Cheung Sha Upper Beach.
Next came the very exciting Hong Kong Disneyland. A visit here will take you from a fairy tale castle to an intergalactic mountain, and to a world where you can see jungle elephants on an exotic river! The Tarzan experience, Lion King, the fireworks, the parade, space mountain and the 4D theatre were our favourites.
We stayed at the Hollywood hotel at Disneyland which was just wonderful. Its got very spacious grounds with a large pool and spa. There is plenty of room for the kids to run off some energy. The Hotel offers a diner were you can get simple meals for breakfast lunch and dinner as well as a range of other restaurants. The Disney characters roam around the foyer meeting and greeting kids and adults which was a huge buzz for everyone.
I can definitely recommend Hong Kong for a family holiday. It offers great shopping, great food, plenty of things to do and a Disneyland...what more could you want!
